Digify Africa boasts a staff complement of 93% women. For Womens’ Month, we spoke to Advanced Learning Manager, Nomacala Mpeta to chat about her experience as a black woman in corporate and in digital.
What is your advice for women who want to get into digital?
Go for it! There has never been an industry and environment, in my opinion, that has been more conducive for us as women to thrive, break barriers and carve our own pathways.
What has been the biggest lesson that you have learnt in your career?
Research, research, research, the jobs in digital that will exist in the future have not been created yet. Also that nothing beats practical hands-on experience. Open yourself up to learning and unlearning. Lastly, everything in our industry thrives on building connections. Build and maintain the relationships you have as they say “Your networks are your net worth” and this industry is SMALL!
What is your message for Women’s Day?
My message is from a verse in the bible from Esther 4:14 paraphrased “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise from another place. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” Basically, whatever space you have been placed in, take your seat at the table, don’t remain silent. Your voice, skills and talents matter for such a time as this.
What has been the biggest challenge that you have dealt with in your career
1. Having to work twice as hard because I am black and female so pretty much bottom of the barrel.
2. Not being paid what I am worth.
