UCT students protesting over fees promised that they would sleep outside the Bremner building until their issues were answered by management. Earlier today, they embarked on their own #FeesMustFall protest over the proposed increase in university fees.
The students were supposed to meet inside the Bremner building, but instead spent the time chanting and deliberating outside under the sun. By late afternoon they had broken into the building.
The students said they had tried on numerous occasions to speak to management, but had not gotten a concrete response. “We’re not here for negotiations but answers and we are tired of the capitalist system because we are black,” said provincial executive committee member of Sasco Naledi Maponopono.
The protesters also showed solidarity with university workers, with banners reading #EndOutsourcing.
Further to their demands was an emergency council meeting to discuss the immediate suspension of fee increases and the adoption of insourcing. They also want to meet with ministers to talk about free education. Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Francis Petersen confirmed that there will be a mass meeting tomorrow, but refused to give a time.
