Mark Buhrer, 31, and Shane McConnachie, 32, two businessmen who grew up in Table View, decided to leave their comfortable and secure homes for a week and put themselves in the homeless’ shoes instead.
Buhrer and McConnachie are directors of a new non-profit organisation, called Dare to Share. The NGO has fed many homeless people, and its directors have set out on the Walk the Walk: Life on the Streets campaign, all to create awareness that the homeless are just like every other human being, and deserve to be treated as such.
The NGO was initiated by Buhrer earlier this year, when he decided that he did not want to celebrate his birthday lavishly. Instead, he gathered a group of friends, ultimately feeding 220 needy individuals at the Haven Night Shelter.
Thus far, together with the help of sponsors, 14 000 meals have been given out. Among these meals were 1 000 hot dogs, 600 litres of soup and 400 loaves of bread! Areas in which Buhrer and McConnachie made appearances include Belville, Green Point, Cape Town’s Central Business District (CBD), Blouberg and Tamboerskloof, among others.
These two entrepreneurs are and should be an inspiration to every person out there, regardless of age. Thank you to Buhrer and McConnachie, for forcing those of us who have a roof over our head and food on our table every day to be wholly appreciative of our lives!
