We’ve all had those nights, you know the ones, where all the drinking and dancing ends up with you and your friends passed out in the living room. This familiar scene is how this episode of web-series, The Foxy Five opens. The Foxy Five is created, directed and written by Jabu Nadia Newman who is a photographer and filmmaker based in Cape Town. It’s about a fictional girl gang consisting of Femme Fatale, Prolly Prebs, Unity Bond, Womxn We and Blaq Beauty, who deal with issues of intersectional feminism.
In this episode the team skillfully deal with transmisogyny, a term Everyday Feminism describes as the confluence of “negative attitudes, expressed through cultural hate, individual and state violence, and discrimination directed toward trans women and trans and gender non-conforming people on the feminine end of the gender spectrum.”
We see how one character, Lebo, experiences the world whether it be cab drivers looking at them* funny or bouncers kicking them out of a bathroom or even just Lebo’s “woke” friends dealing with how transphobic their own behaviour is.
