Spring has sprung, well sort of, if the weather just settles down. This is one of the best seasons of the year. It’s not cold anymore, that’s a big bonus, and the birds have returned. This week we pay homage to the queen of the seasons, Spring, with a Top Five of all the things we love about Spring.

No. 5 You cannot beat the weather

hot in here

Ah, it’s finally warmer. I don’t know about you but I am more than happy to pack my boots and coats away. The chill was a bit stubborn this year but it looks like we can finally be optimistic about the weather. Spring is the queen because it’s not cold and it’s not too hot either, an even tempered fave. If the heat starts to get too much for you, grab a cold pressed juice at Unwrapped in Braamfontein.

No. 4 So many outdoor activities

catch me outside

That garden that you have been neglecting, you can finally tend to it again. Jogging isn’t such a hellish nightmare and even taking out the rubbish doesn’t have to be a life or death decision. My personal favourite is sitting outside and baking in the sun, winter took that away from me. You can find nature even in Johannesburg, why not visit the Melville Koppies or take a hike at the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve in Durban.

No. 3 The food

delicious food Some of the country’s best food festivals happen in spring. Spring also brings with her ice cream and cold refreshing juices. The food is light and textured, bye bye soup and dumplings (I have nothing against you) and hello wraps and fruit salads. It’s also easier to eat healthy in spring. The need for comfort food, almost, falls away. If you’re looking for a new guiltless pleasure, try Yococo’s mix berry dairy free ice cream.

No. 2 It’s party time

7/11

Spring is known for flowers, blue skies, animals mating and spring bashes. September heralds the return of outdoor events like HomeComing Picnic and the Heritage Day Bash. The is a spring celebration for the next three months in almost every city around the country. Don’t know where to go first, I recommend HomeComing Africa. Bae’s are found at the Voortrekker Monument on that day.

I mentioned putting away boots earlier. This is the best thing about spring. The clothes, the makeup and the hair. Spring offers a chance for you to reinvent yourself. The protective styles are taken down and your hair is released from its winter hibernation. The colour palettes are all soft and bright. You can wear glossy lips again and did I mention that spring does wonders for the skin (hello, just been spritzed, look). The ultimate winner, you can show your legs again heeeyyy.
