The teaser trailer is out and now we’re so ready for 2019
On Friday morning we woke up to the joyous news that the teaser trailer for The Lion King remake is out. If you are a child of the of the 90s, then you probably grew up on Disney animated movies and The Lion King may have been on the top of that list. We sang (well really screamed) along to “nants’ ingwenyama bakithi baba”, we cried real tears when Mufasa died and we all wanted “Hakuna Matata” in real life. It came as no surprise that the 90s and early 00s babies of the world all let out a unified squeal of excitement when a remake was announced. If you are not on the bus of happiness singing “ooh I just can’t wait to be king”, I am here to convince you that you should be. Here are three reasons why you should be excited for The Lion King.
It’s live action
Real animals, there are real kudus and lions and a live action Rafiki. The CGI looks amazing and life like. I might even go as far as saying that The Lion King may even have better CGI than The Jungle Book. The visuals are to die for so if you are a sucker for pretty pictures, Mufasa and the fam, it will give you a feast for the eyes.
Our Queen Mother, Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter will be voicing the adult Nala. Yes, you have read correctly, Beyonce is in the remake of The Lion King. The rest of the cast members are brilliant as well and if you are not a big fan of Bey (how, Sway) then you can look forward to John Kani as Rafiki (Shout out South Africa), James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, and Donald Glover as Simba. Other cast members include Seth Rogan, John Oliver and Florence Kasumba.
For the Culture
The live action remake of The Lion King is an unapologetic celebration of blackness. With the cast being predominantly black and including an African actor, we are finally seeing ourselves centered in our stories. This is important for our future generations, they will watch a black story with black voices. This one is for the culture.
So go ahead, get excited and if you’re not there yet; here’s the teaser trailer:
