British Council Connect ZA and Live SA, in association with sShadoworkSs, are proud to announce a new series of events in South Africa, bringing future music artists from the UK and South Africa together for unique performances in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
From July to October this year, South Africa will host monthly mini-tours from UK acts sharing line-ups with local underground bands, DJs and performers.
The series will kick off on the weekend of 19 July with Live @ The Alex, when one of the UK’s hottest producer/DJ Actress, who will perform on the same line-up as South Africa’s globally admired alternative rock band BLK JKS. The following night, Actress will play at Live@ The Assembly alongside Ivan Turanjanin, Terrence Pearce, Plaigarhythm and Sir Vincentin the Cape Town leg of the series.

Actress aka Darren Cunningham is a London-based electronic music artist now signed to Ninja Tune, who was recently cited by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke as “my new current obsession”, and warmed up for the singer at his recent London gigs. Founder of the Werk Discs label in 2003, his third studio album RIP has made him an underground worldwide smash, drawing rave reviews from music press across the globe. As a remixer, he’s had the call from Radiohead, Shangaan Electro and Panda Bear, and don’t be surprised if you see his sounds popping up in Kanye West or Drake productions, both of whom have been taking an interest recently.

Playing live with the full band for one of their first shows with a rejigged line-up, BLK JKS need little introduction. Still the most exciting band in South Africa today, with a new horn section and fresh from an intense new wave of rehearsals and song-writing, this is a chance to see the next phase of the band in full technicolour. The Cape Town support cast is a premium selection of DJ/Producers driving the house and techno scene in Cape Town and beyond.
The events are powered by support from the British Council’s Connect ZA programme, which is focused on connecting the creative communities of the UK and South Africa. Wrapped around the event series, Connect ZA will see visiting artists connecting with other local performers for talks, workshops and collaborations. The artists performing at the following three events will be announced shortly.
The events are also being co-produced and co-curated with young people from Live SA.
Tickets can be purchased through Webtickets http://www.webtickets.co.za/ and on the door.
