As South African’s today we stand tall and proud as we hosted yet another successful football tournament, the Cape Town 8 nations international tournament.
The 8 nations who were involved were South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Japan and Kenya. Our very own South African boys finished at second place with 6points in group A, with Brazil holding the fort in first place with 7 points.
The 3rd of June was a disappointing Sunday to soccer legend Diego Maradona’s side, as Argentina failed to defeat Brazil in the Cape Town under 20 international tournament finals, but hey they did get second place which is better than nothing. All the bragging rights for the tournament went to Brazil, as they took the trophy and their jersey number seven scooped player of the tournament.
The game started off in rather a mild mood with Argentina taking full control and leaving the Brazilians with little room to breathe. Even though they had Brazil in their hands, they didn’t manage to score any goals. Argentina kept the attack on as the match unfolded, totally ruled during the first half of the game. The ninety minutes of the game went by very quickly and still no goals from both teams. Extra time was added, and Brazil knew what they had to do. They fired two goals within the first 15 minutes of the extra time added and they kept their defense strong.
In the end Brazil was crowned the champions of the tournament. Argentina got second place leaving South Africa at third place as they beat Japan in the 3rd and 4th place playoffs.
Top goal scorer – Thabani Mthembu (5 goals) (South Africa)
Top goalkeeper – Andrea Mehring (Argentina)
