From the viral “Slyza Tsotsi” by Major League DJs with Cassper Nyovest, Okmalumkoolkat and Riky Rick, to the exchange of spirits between Thandiswa Mazwai and Mashayabhuqe KaMamba on “Izayoni (Tribute to Makhuzwayo)”, we list South African songs we listened to and fell in love with in the month of May. Members of the Live SA Cape Town team each give us their favourite song, and tell us why they think it bangs and what little heaven it takes them to.

Major League DJz  – “Slyza Tsotsi”

Done by some of the hottest artists right now; Cassper Nyovest, Okmalumkoolkat, Riky Rick and someone else called Carpo, “Slyza Tsotsi” is a great song with a cool beat reminiscent of the pantsula days. Carpo’s segment is really annoying, the song could have done without it. The song is a sure fit for the dancefloor, but it will probably be forgotten by December. – Asanda Gura

Card On Spokes ft. Bonj Mpanza – “Sunwalker”

What an amazing song. I don’t normally listen to electronic music but I’m going to start listening to “Sunwalker” everyday, it’s that great. Vocalist, Bonj Mpanza from Cape Town band, The City, is fantastic and makes me wish I could sing. “Sunwalker” puts you in a trance, the kind you never want to end. It’s in everyone’s best interest to listen to this song because, although it’s not scientifically proven yet, your life will change for the better after. – Asanda Gura

Christian Tiger School – “Cinderella Rocafella”

“Cinderella Rocafella” is a groovy, futuristic, dark, and at times twisted yet magical journey that could only be achieved by Cape Town duo, Christian Tiger School. The duo is widely recognised for their infusion of hip hop and electronic music. This is the second single released off their immensely anticipated album, Chrome Tapes which will be released on June 16. The duo has also recently been signed to Tommy Boy Entertainment, a hip hop and electronic record label in New York. “Cinderella Rocafella” has received over 17 000 plays on SoundCloud since its release at the beginning of this month. – Jamie Petersen

Mashaybuqe KaMamba x Thandiswa – “Izayoni (Tribute to Makhuzwayo)”

Digital maskandi pioneer Mashayabhuqe KaMamba and vocalist Thandiswa Mazawi’s collaborative “Izayoni (Tribute to Makhuzwayo)” takes you on a spiritual journey and serves as a reminder of where black South Africans come from. With the world evolving, it’s easy to lose sight of self and get trapped in the ideals of the West. This song shows that African culture makes for good creative content. Just like most of Mashayabhuqe’s songs, “Izayoni (Tribute to Makhuzwayo)” is a combination of maskandi and new school commercial music which gives it a unique edge. – Kgorula Bitterhout

PH ft. Thandiswa Mazwai – “Wa N’tiva (Bo’T)”

If you’re not listening to this song I don’t know what you doing with your life. “Wa Ntiva” is my top hit for 2015 so far. Producer and rapper PH took tsonga rap to some other level, and seemingly, anything that has Thandiswa Mazwai’s golden voice is a must listen. The singer turns every song into a hit. I’m jamming to this tune everyday from bed to the office. Do yourself and peep it. – Philela Singama

L-Tido – “Dlala Kayona”

L-Tido’s “Dlala Kayona” struggles in the originality department but then what rapper doesn’t in 2015? The hook is an appropriation of yesteryear kwaito group New School’s song of the same name but Tido delivers it in Young Thug’s high pitch autotuned fashion. And of course the rapper’s still deploying his monotonous flow. What’s surprising though is that the song goes in! Even I can’t tell you why. – Sabelo Mkhabela

Tweezy Presents “The Realest” ft. Reason

Tweezy is the most prolific producer in the game right now. He produced AKA’s biggest hits from his Levels album, namely “Run Jozi”, “All Eyes on Me” and “Sim Dope”. The producer offered those menacing basslines of his to accomplished lyricist Reason and boy, does he go in. The beat’s arrangement – with pauses, different tempos, and strip-offs – coupled with Reason’s mastery on the mic, makes the song the masterpiece it is.“The Realest” might be the only song with a title so trite that you’ll bump over and over again just like I did. – Sabelo Mkhabela
