The Ilizwe Lam campaign has reached the halfway mark, and is going strong. The internet safety campaign which launched on 25 April announced singer Shekhinah as the ambassador of the campaign last week.
“I chose to get involved with Ilizwe Lam because I felt passionate about being the change that I want to see. The internet can be a safe place but sometimes it ends up being a bit tricky, dangerous and ugly. I feel like the Ilizwe Lam campaign could help people play and stay safe [on the internet],” says Shekhinah.
In the past 6 weeks, the campaign has equipped 550 young people in three provinces with the necessary skills to navigate the interesting (and sometimes unsafe) online world.
“The training has been helpful, not just for me, but for my friends too. We learned a lot about staying safe, protecting private information and how to handle things like guys asking for nudes. The training also showed us how to make the most of the internet to learn and discover great opportunities for our lives,” said youth ambassador, 15, Jamie-Lee Simelane.
