The VIP Debate Club is back this month. Join us for the 2015 relaunch of that Live VIP ZA favourite – the VIP Debate Club, in Braamfontein.
The VIP Debate Club is a regular open event at which young people are invited to discuss and debate some of the most pertinent youth-specific political topics of the day in a relaxed space over a drink. Facilitated by young social commentators and influencers, the club is a great place to join like-minded people for a healthy debate.
In the run-up to the June 16 Festival, we will host a pre-festival debate on xenophobia titled Am I Xenophobic?
Between April and May 2015, South Africa’s troubles with xenophobic violence gripped the world, the rest of the continent and broader South African society. In the ensuing tension, headlines such as those of Emmanuel Sithole’s murder and – sometimes inaccurate – social media commentary compounded the confusion and anxiety – forcing difficult conversations in homes across the country.
Our social attitudes, the government’s (lack of) response, South Africa’s diplomatic responsibility to its neighbours and the pervasiveness of anti-black violence rose to the fore of our conversations in an unprecedented fashion. As is the way of the VIP Debate Club, on May 26th at the Bannister Hotel, we will continue the difficult conversation, asking questions that will force us to grapple with the matter in a broadly contextualised yet individualised fashion.
