#CreativeHustles is a series of free events for young people, aged 18 to 35 years, to engage with established creative industry professionals and arts practitioners. Read about the last hustle here.
In this our 9th installment, we will be hosting an all-women panel discussion, breaking down the nitty-gritty of what goes into working across mediums and creative disciplines, and how it pushes one’s own creative boundaries and practices. Our confirmed panel includes the talented Nirma Madhoo, Simone Sebastian, Tabita Rezaire and facilitated by Pippa Tshabalala.
The event will be taking place at Ithuba Gallery in Braamfontein on September 7 and we would love you to be part of the audience and engage with the panel.
For the past few years, we have been working with the British Council Connect ZA to connect the new generation of creative professionals and audiences in the UK and South Africa. British Council Connect ZA, in association with Live SA, have brought you the successful Creative Futures and Creative Hustles event series and our latest collaboration was part of the 2015 ACT / UJ Arts and Culture Conference.

Pippa Tshabalala (Facilitator) is currently the On-Air Producer for Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, NickToons and NickJr at Viacom International Media Networks Africa. She started working for Viacom in 2012 as the On-Air Producer for MTV Base and later MTV SA.
She has taught Honors and Masters in 3D Animation as well as a theory course on Comic Books and Videogames. She writes an opinion column for South Africa’s premier gaming magazine NAG, as well as a variety of websites/publications and present inserts on Vodacom’s online show Trending Tech. Simone Sebastian is a Senior Producer at onedotzero and part of the team running the cascade_ZA program as part of the British Council’s Innovation ZA.
Her work lies at the intersection of commerce and culture – she has previously worked with artists and creatives to produce culturally relevant campaigns in the Middle East for brands such as PUMA, ABSOLUT and Mercedes-Benz. Nirma Madhoo-Chipps is a fashion photographer and fashion filmmaker trained at the London College of Fashion and based between London and South Africa. Her experience prior to becoming an image maker is as a fashion designer and design educator in South Africa. Nirma is a multi-disciplinary thinker with a specific interest in digital technologies and specializing in fashion related projects. Future Body fashion film premiered at the London Short Film Festival and recently showed with the work of Bart Hess and Hussein Chalayan at Melbourne Fashion Festival. Tabita Rezaire is a French Guyanese – Danish video and new media artist, intersectional activist, tech politics researcher and Kemetic yoga teacher based in Johannesburg. She holds a Master in Artist Moving Image from Central Saint Martins College in London.
Her work focuses on decolonial knowledge and the political aesthetics of resistance through screen-based practices. She engages in cinematic urban intervention and digital healing activism, producing videos, urls, writings and talks. She also leads technology and booty politics workshops.
Exploring the performativity of encounters, online and offline, her works address the pervasive matrix of coloniality and its effects in technology, sexuality, race politics, gender, representation politics and spirituality. She co-runs the art office Malaxa, is a co-founder of NTU – a decolonial tech agency – and a member of the Afro Feminist collective MWASI. Follow her on twitter: @browncorefly
British Council Connect ZA is a major series of cultural exchanges between the UK and South Africa marking 2014 as a celebration of 20 years of democracy in South Africa. From 2013 to 2015, the programme will support cultural connections between young people aged 18-35 in the UK and South Africa with series of arts projects and use digital platforms to build creative networks through live music, film, visual art and design. British Council Connect ZA aims to reach new and diverse audiences for the arts and stimulate innovation, whilst forging new collaborations with organisations and individuals on both continents.
