The Fugard Theatre’s production of the multi-award winning musical created by David Kramer and the late Taliep Peterson, Kat and the Kings, has returned! It has received an overwhelming popular demand, and takes place at the Fugard Theatre in District Six.
The double Olivier award-winning production, produced by Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre, stars a multi-talented young cast – it is headed by veteran actor Danny Butler as Old Kat Diamond and Dean Balie as the energetic Young Kat. The cast is supported by Grant Peres as Blingo, Zak Toerien as Magoo, Carlo Daniels as Balie and Amy Trout as Lucy.
Set in the Mother City’s District Six in the 1950s, the musical explores the journey of teenager Kat Diamond, from singing outside Westminster Café to recording a seven single record, and performing at Durban’s The Claridges Hotel. Young Kat forms a cappella group, called the Cavalla Kings, with his friends Balie, Bingo and Magoo, and with Lucy Dixon becoming a later addition to the group. The young team ultimately becomes a sensation in the District. Promotional pamphlets describe the production to constitute a ‘dynamic six piece live band [that] accompanies the action every night’.
Be sure to not miss out on what is termed ‘a quintessential Cape Town experience’!
