Hip Hop Kaslam returns for the seventh time to the Baxter to showcase Spaza, kasi lifestyle and what freedom means to the youth in a show called “iFreedom Yethu”.
Spaza has become an urban movement of young and inspired vernacular rappers, singers and poets. Hip Hop Kaslam has for the last three years been the leading Spaza platform, showcasing artists like the nationally renowned Driemanskap, the multi-talented Sugah and veteran artist Dat, the first emcee to write a verse in Xhosa back in 1995.
Hip Hop Kaslam will rock the Baxter Theatre Concert Hall on Saturday, 2 March, at 6pm in a musical celebration of home-brewed hip hop that depicts township life through the eyes of kasi bred performers. The show will also feature for the first time “rymklets” artists who rap in Afrikaaps, an Afrikaans dialect spoken on the Cape Flats. An exciting addition to the show is artists who rap in “rymklets”, an Afrikaans dialect indigenous to the Cape Flats.
This seventh performance of the Hip Hop Kaslam show is titled iFreedom Yethu meaning “our freedom” in Xhosa. Through the use of their mother tongues artists will depict the true meaning of Freedom of Expression as South Africa youth. Vernacular artists were invited to submit songs around this theme and the hip hop community was given three weeks to listen to the material and vote for their favourite artists. The successful artists were Axolile Ngumane, nicknamed “Axo Uphambene”, writer, producer and musician Emage Gaz’ Lerhumusha and the ambitious duo Gudfellaz.
