#FutureMusic series is a collaboration between British Council Connect ZA and Live Magazine SA. In 2013 both Johannesburg and Cape Town have played host to unique monthly mini-tours where UK acts share the line-up with local underground bands, DJs and performers. For the final of the #FutureMusic shows of 2013, British Council Connect ZA and Live Magazine SA have teamed up with the Roundhouse (UK) for #FutureMusic Rising!
Meet #FutureMusic Rising Nominee, Reason
Cutting his teeth in rap battles, Reason formally began his household infiltration in 2005, dropping jingles for ‘The Unrestricted Breakfast Show’ with DJ Fresh on YFM. The Tembisa-born rapper went on to be named Hype Magazine’s ‘King of the Bedroom’ and hasn’t looked back since. Performing around the country and internationally in Scandinavia, Reason dropped his debut album, ‘The Reasoning’ in 2010. Since then the rapper has signed to Kool Out Entertainment and more recently to record label Motif Records where he joins Zaki Ibrahim and Tumi as labelmates. Reason dropped his sophomore release, ‘Audio3D’ in 2012 and his rise and rise has been escalating since.
Why do you think you were chosen to perform at #FutureMusic Rising?
I think its the music me and my time make. We work so hard to present fresh, quality music that looks and sounds as good in your CD shuttle as it does on radio, stage & even on TV. Its an edgier, “futuristic” and young-yet-poetic approach to South African and even African hip-hop that not that many artists on the continent peruse. I guess coming to the show is the best way to see this. Its more than just rap songs that people know or don’t; its a show. New age mixed with old school. Young flavors mixed with old. Its a cocktail of entertainment.
Can you name a few acts that you feel have helped to shape your sound?
Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West and Lauryn Hill
3. Any other local acts you would have liked to see on the line-up?
Okmalumkoolkat or Dirty Paraffin, Ricky Rick, P.H.fat and Christian Tiger School.
