#FutureMusic series is a collaboration between British Council Connect ZA and Live Magazine SA. In 2013 both Johannesburg and Cape Town have played host to unique monthly mini-tours where UK acts share the line-up with local underground bands, DJs and performers. For the final of the #FutureMusic shows of 2013, they have teamed up with the Roundhouse (UK) for #FutureMusic Rising! Join our Facebook event.
Meet #FutureMusic Rising Nominee, The Brother Moves On
Genre-defying and strictly independent, The Brother Moves On has been conquering Johannesburg since 2009. The band, who evolved from a visual arts collective, have built a strong reputation for consistently pushing the boundaries of sound and live performance. The painted sextet shift through build-ups, lullabies, breaks and pure melody, held precariously together by Siyabonga Mthembu’s vocals and mind control. This Friday The Alex will see the group hot off the heels of a focused year of touring in countries close to home (such as Mozambique, Le Reunion Islands, Swaziland and most recently Zimbabwe) as well as further afield in France. Their new single is released on the day of the event.
Why do you think you were chosen?
People like to see us half naked so we started to wear less and less clothes while on stage. Now we are known for full frontal male nudity. Our audience are sinners mostly so it makes sense that they would be enthralled by all that male nudity. It helps when you’re trying to be a popular band. Just show your junk. It’s simple. Oh yeah, and we sound like drugs. Also something these kids are fascinated by.
Can you name a few acts that have shaped your sound?
The Mars Volta, Busi Mhlongo, Madala Kunene, Moses Molelekwa, System of a Down, Modest Mouse, Animal Collective, Broken Social Scene, The Volume, 340ml plus others.
Any other local acts you would have liked to see on the line-up?
BCUC
Al baire
Acid Chipmonks
BIG FKN GUN
Bateleur
[^They were on there and we’re competing with them. They’re going down!]
