Yesterday, Cape Town #FeesMustFall students marched to parliament to protest for free and decolonised education. Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan was giving the mid-term budget policy statement in parliament. The minister came out to accept and sign the students’ memorandum then went back into the National Assembly. Students stayed outside parliament singing protest songs.
In the afternoon, chaos ensued. The police, who were there in numbers, dispersed students, chasing them with stun grenades and military vehicles all the way to the Grand Parade and Cape Town station. This was after students had set on fire the makeshift coffin of Minister Blade Nzimande they had been carrying during the protest.
