My long time school friend had been ranting and raving about this uber-cool restaurant that served amazing food. I’m talking about grilled prawns, beef rib eye, chicken curry that would make Auntie Priya’s eyes water and the most tender roast lamb and Camembert pizza. Convinced that she would have to roll me home if I tried this restaurant,we finally set a Sunday lunch date and in confidence, I ordered a grilled a Grilled Prawn Curry with Jasmin scented Basmati rice and Coriander Salad. I could hear Auntie Priya giggling as the waiter placed the ramekin of three prawns swimming in orange broth in front of me for 85bucks – OH HELL NAH!.
Four mouth fulls later – my stomach growled in betrayal. Then and there I knew that this joint would never smell my hard earned cash again! It was not possible that customers were spending that much money on bite-size portions and going home satisfied. I decided to go on a hunt for the best buffet restaurants that would feed me and my homies until we could stomach no more.
Check out what I found…
Sheikh’s Place – Johannesburg (Rivonia)
The Sheikh’s Palace offers something exotic to appreciate and hope to enchant you with the customs and traditions of an ancient civilization through Lebanese hospitality which is expressed by the offering of a variety of foods. Mezze – derived from the word ‘miz’ (which means to taste) is usually served as an array of sumptuous, individually hand prepared starters with contrasting flavours and texture. These delicacies are served buffet style to the centre of the table and eaten with bread or fresh vegetables from the Jacht Ghodra (a platter of fresh seasonal vegetables) a healthier, lighter option.
This is one of those places where it is okay to eat with your hands; tearing a piece of bread or vegetable, either placing it on the desired item and pinching between your fingers or elegantly dipping it-making sure your hands are kept clean.
Main course is then served – either plated or plattered for guest to share. Smoking of the Argileh (Middle Eastern Hubbly Bubbly) is customary as well as the performance by writhing Belly Dancers, where tipping of the dancer is a sign of enjoyment.
Dessert is the most important custom accompanied with coffee or mint tea showing that one is satisfied with the hospitality. A single malt, cigar, cocktail and cognac menu is available.
