When R&B and pop artist Ed Sheeran performed at the Europe Music Awards (EMA) this past Sunday, the crowd’s reaction indicated the amazing effect his voice has. But he’s not the only British male performer that has all of us swooning. Here are five British singers/songwriters along with their songs that will make the ladies, and some gents, want to fall in love.
1. Ed Sheeran
He’s been in the game since 2005, but he only gained international popularity in 2012 after the release of his debut album + (pronounced “plus”) in September 2011. It became the second-best selling album and the ninth biggest-selling album in the UK. The new album x (multiply) was released in June this year and went straight to number 1 on the UK and US charts. At the MTV EMAs, the 23-year-old performed “Thinking Out Loud”, the hit from his second album. It’s a song that will melt your heart, because who doesn’t want to be loved until they’re 70?
2. Sam Smith
Sam is only 22 years old, yet there is so much maturity in his voice. His first music appearance was in 2012, on English-music duo Disclosure’s song “Latch”. A year later, he featured on Naughty Boy’s single “La La La”. The same year he released an EP with four tracks. His debut album In The Lonely Hour, about unrequited love, was officially released in May this year. Twitter has popularised a concept called friend-zoning which is basically a platonic relationship where one wishes to enter a romantic relationship, while the other person doesn’t. Sam in this case is the one being friend-zoned. The way that he plays with his voice in this song can make you want to beg the other person to love him the same way.
3. Daley
Professionally known as Daley, he’s the 28-year-old singer with a lady-like voice. But don’t let that put you off, because his vocal talent matches that of singer Maxwell. His breakthrough was when he featured on the Gorillaz’s single “Doncamatic”. His Day&Nights debut album was released in February this year and it features award-winning songstress Marsha Ambrosius on a song titled Alone together written by Daley.
4. James Arthur
James, 26, was a finalist in the 2012 UK X Factor. His debut single was a cover of Shontelle’s “Impossible”, which became the seventh-biggest selling single in the UK charts. He went on to release three more singles; “You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Loves You”, “Recovery” and “Get Down”, which formed part of his eponymously titled debut album. He has thus far won International Breakthrough of the Year and Best International Song awards at the NRJ Music Awards and at the Los Premios 40 Principales Awards respectively last year. In one of his songs, titled “Roses”, he features award-winning singer Emeli Sande. Although the original version of “Certain things” features UK band Chasing Grace, the acoustic version of him alone is more powerful vocal wise. It’s a raw and soulful reassuring rendition on love.
5. John Newman
He’s popular for “Love Me Again”, his debut single released in 2013. John’s breakthrough came in 2012 when he was featured in The Rudimentals’ single “Feel the love”. At 24, he released his debut album Tribute on October 2013, and in the same month, it took number one spot at the UK charts. John won Best International Video award for “Love me again” at the Los Premios 40 Principales in 2013. It’s in his acoustic version of “Out of my head”, where he sings about the loneliness of losing a partner. He sings in a way that makes you feel his pain.
Not only do they sing so perfectly, they also have mad writing skills and they wrote most of their songs. We don’t know about you but we are certainly in love with these guys but do let us know if you agree and tell us which songs of these singers speak to you the most.
