June is typically Pride month around the world, and with its elaborate displays, marches, bright colours and celeb endorsements, this year was no different. We take a look at some of Pride’s best moments from around the world.
In South Africa, Cape Town Pride took place in March, for some reason. But Durban Pride joined the rest of the world in celebrating this month, and even Christians joined in in solidarity.

In the US, Barack Obama declared June as Pride month, and this has been the tradition ever since, until this year, when President Donald Trump declined to continue that declaration. Not that that put a damper on the celebrations. In New York, the Empire State Building lit up with the Pride rainbow colours as the event officially kicked off.

In Toronto, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau turned up to show his support for the event wearing socks with the words “Eid Muburak” written on them.
Trudeau reportedly explained why:
“It is all about including people. This is why I am happy to wish a Eid Muburak to everyone of the Muslim faith. It’s all about how we celebrate the multiple layers of identities that make Canada extraordinary and strong, and today we celebrate with the entire LGBTQ community.”
Revellers celebrated, Prime Minister Trudeau marched, and the 2017 Pride Toronto parade went off without a hitch. https://t.co/Ep34lJGxpE pic.twitter.com/gHgFI5joWt

On June 26, Pride rallies in Istanbul were violently broken up by Turkish authorities. Pride was banned in the country three years ago, with the Istanbul governor’s office reportedly citing security concerns. Police used rubber bullets and teargas to break up the crowd and about 20 marchers were reportedly arrested.
