Growing up eKasi is a unique South African experience, and Kwesta was able to capture it in 4:25 minutes in his music video for Spirit.

The beauty of the video is in the little details that were included to make the video so reflective of our day to day – from the Hart pots on the stove, the bed that stands on bricks to the Spaza shop, every single shot is well thought out.

1. The plastic covered seats
Nothing was worse than sitting on these chairs on a hot Summer’s day as your sweat would drip onto the plastic or when the plastic had started to tear, and you would sit uncomfortably as the plastic pierced into your skin.

2. The black mother and child poster which featured in every black household
The township household aesthetic was incomplete without this poster of the unknown mother and child.

3. The taxi driver mean mug
Few things fill you with more fear than a mean mug and a few harsh words from a taxi driver when you pay with a R100 note in the morning

4. Church vs Tradition
Spirituality was a constant feature of a township. From the baptisms at the nearest river to long queues outside a sangoma’s home.
