Three times our national teams dissapointed South Africa
by: Armand Mukenge - 30 November 2017
Over the years South Africa has experienced serious heartache at the hands of the country’s national sports teams. So we have put together a list of the times our national teams made us catch feelings.
1. Bafana Bafana again!
Bafana Bafana failed millions of its supporters when they once again failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the world’s best football competition.
After several defeats at the hand of Cape Verde and Senegal, the hopes and dreams of so many South African were shuttered. Bafana is yet to qualify for the major show down since 2002. The only time they made it into a world cup was when South Africa was the host in 2010, where the team failed to perform well.
2. The humbled Springboks
At the beginning of 2017 the Boks were on a streak, winning six matches in a row but they suffered a humiliating beating at the hands of the All Blacks and the Republic of Ireland on the 11th of November. The score was 38-3, the biggest win ever over the South African side. The team lost 57-0 to New Zealand – making it New Zealand’s biggest win ever over South Africa.
3. The proud Proteas
The South African cricket team has been one of the most consistent over the past few decades. However, the Test match against England had South Africa shook as England comfortably retained the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy. Sports24 chief writer, Rob Houwing reported that the Proteas are currently the worst-performing South African touring team in England after losing back in August. However, it should be mentioned that they have been the best team that has represented South Africa very well at major tournaments.
While the men’s teams have consistently disappointed us, the woman are making us proud. On the 24th of September, Banyana won the COSAFA cup in Zimbabwe. The Proteas women were semi-finalist in the women cricket world cup. …we salute you indeed!
