The Live Mag Team Presents Top 5. This week we list our top 5 favourite things

Fridays are undoubtedly the best days of the week. It is both a beginning and an end. To celebrate our favourite week day, we have decided to list a Top Five of our favourite things. This list is a mix of all the things that the team holds dear; books, movies, restaurants and so on and so forth.

We want to know your Top Five. Tell us in the comments.

No. 5  Aneno Nail and Coffee Bar

Aneno Nail and Coffee BarAneno Nails has been a wonderful discovery since Live Mag moved to Melville. With reasonable prices and great coffee, this black woman owned business is the truth. They often have specials too, like Student Wednesdays so you’re not breaking the budget. Check them out on Twitter at @Aneno_nails and Instagram @aneno_nails

No. 4  Born To Kwaito

Born to Kwaito

We grew up listening to kwaito and I am sure that at least 80% of black 90s babies have a happy family memory set to a soundtrack of kwaito music. Born to Kwaito has quickly proven itself as a must have for the personal libraries of black readers. Esinako and Sihle have created a piece of literature that draws their readers into the world of music and dancing. There’s a whole chapter dedicated to kwaito legend Mandoza and a chapter on the iconic TV show, Yizo Yizo. Our favourite chapter is the one dedicated to the women of kwaito. We have written a more detailed review of the book. Read it here.

No. 3  Chloe x Halle

Chloe x Halle

Chloe x Halle are the ultimate sister goals. They make beautiful music, act together and they coordinate their outfits, if that’s not the ultimate dream between sisters then I don’t know what is. The Kids are Alright is our anthem right now. You can catch Chloe x Halle on Grownish or stream their music on iTunes and Deezer.

No. 2  Insecure

Insecure

Issa Rae never disappoints and that’s why we were on the edge of our sits waiting for the August 12 premier of Insecure season 3. We were all a bit nervous when it looked like Lawrence will not be returning for this season but so far, Issa has not let us down, the episodes have been on point. Insecure is best known for its relatability. The show is almost as relatable as SZA’s album CTRL. Every black woman in her 20s can imagine herself as either Issa or Molly. The production quality is flawless as well. Shout out to the lighting department for lighting dark skinned people spectacularly. At the end of season 2, we saw Issa and Lawrence getting some much needed closure. Now Issa finds herself in a maybe, almost, relationship with Daniel (who she cheated on Lawrence with). We will not reveal any more. Just watch the show, it’s worth it.

And our most favourite thing in the whole world right now is….

No. 1  Braamfontein

Braamkids

This was really hard but when we really thought about it, Braamfontein had to be number one. We might have moved to the ‘burbs but we will forever be Braam Kids. Braam has an electricity in the air. It’s one of the few places in Jo’burg where young people are allowed to just be themselves. Students dress like they about to model for Vogue, you can get food for really cheap (shout out to Kota Paleis for the R19 kotas and FastMart for the R15 chips Mamaputle misses you the most and R. Jannas, Terry practically lived off of R5 samoosas), there are amazing thrift stores. We don’t need to sell you on Braam, Braam sells itself.

Join us next week when we will share another amazing Top Five. You can share your Top Five Favourite Things with us in the comments or on our Facebook or Twitter Pages.
