1200x628-The Vagina Monologues

While scrolling through hundreds of episodes of series, documentaries and movies in search of the perfect download to watch on my commute home, I unintentionally stumbled onto something brilliant. At the time, I didn’t know what I was looking for, I just knew that when I saw it I’d know. Then I found it titled, The Vagina Monologues.

Based on Eve Ensler’s award-winning theatre production of the same name, this eye-opening documentary sees the acclaimed writer and performer delivering breathtakingly honest insights gathered from women of all walks of life about their relationship with their not-so-private part.

I watched the 77 minute HBO special right till the very end and would encourage women to do the same because it will make you realise that the vagina means many different things to many different women and that the V word shouldn’t be a taboo subject.

“I bet you’re worried. I was worried. I was worried about vaginas. I was worried about what we think about vaginas, and even more worried that we don’t think about them.” Eve Ensler

Eve tells of how she’s interviewed hundreds of women, mothers, daughters, lesbians, survivors of sexual assault, sex workers, young and old. Many of them had been reluctant to discuss the topic, but none of them walked away regretting that they had. They spoke of hair, underwear, shaving, texture, naming it, touching it, looking at it,having other people see it, what their mothers told them about it, being ridiculed for wanting to find pleasure from it and instances of abuse.

“…to speak of them out loud, to speak of their hunger and pain and loneliness and humour, to make them visible so that can not be ravaged in the dark without great consequence.” she said.

As a woman, I think that talking about our vaginas is important and watching this documentary is paramount because we still live in an age where female genital mutilation is a reality, women mastabating is discouraged, while male masturbation is encouraged and joked about and society constantly telling us what to do with our vaginas. Women will be liberated to own their bodies and laugh about this unspoken topic with no embarrassment.
