Recap: South African Fashion Week AW 17, opening night
by: Tshepo Mosokotso - 21 September 2016
The guests were requested to wear only black but of course, there were few of those fashionistas who did not adhere to the theme … perhaps people like The Times’ Khomotso Moloto and Ntombenhle Shezi to stylist Mahlatse James and photographer Trevor Stuurman are born to always go against the grain.
That attitude reared it fabulous head in the runway too. Upcoming and established designers took that now-or-never route. Naturally, for some, it worked and others, not so much. Below are the top five collections that excited me.
The designer was my favourite: The manipulation of the fabric was intricately beautiful and the collection was very much Asian inspired with a rebellious attitude. Each look was perfectly complemented by Dr. Martens boots. Whoever did the styling nailed it.
This super cool collection won this year’s Sunglass Hut New Talent Search competition. Their collection was reminiscent of Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons label. It had a very strong Japanese influence. I want to own each and every piece from this collection. It makes me happy.
You know how military wear clothes tend to be boring and generic these days? Well, this label managed to defy that expectation. They gave the trend a different perspective – and revived it. It was refreshing to see how they manipulated the fabric and embellishment to make it look now. Clever tailoring was also a key factor.
This collection was characterised by playful proportions coupled with minimalistic design details. And best of all, they accessorized the models with beautifully crafted and environmentally friendly jewellery.
This designer was all about the monochrome mood and no-fuss fashion. What I loved about the collection was that she had a very strong tailoring element to it and she played very well with proportions. The collection was all about clean lines and practicality. When you want to take it easy and be relaxed, this occasion wear collection is for you.
